ESMOD Berlin - Focus Programme

We are excited to present Focus! Our brand new extra curricular course programme. We have created a diverse choice of practical and theoretical courses ranging from draping to anthropology and a range of delights in between.
ESMOD Berlin – Focus has been designed to allow participants to chose modules according to their wishes without interference of starting dates or course content. This concept provides the opportunity to create a personal course structure within one year.
If you choose two modules a price reduction of 10% will be granted. Choose three modules and your overall price will be reduced by 15%.
Courses are presented in intensive (full time 1 week), evening (part time, weekly) or weekend (full time, weekly) frameworks.

Practical courses

F4-11 Focus Textile manipulation (intensive course)

The ESMOD Berlin – Focus textile manipulation course addresses the exciting field of textile design.
Creative surface manipulation gives individuality to a collection and grants the designer a unique point of difference. This course gives a taste of three diverse textile manipulation methods: screen printing, knit and appliqué.
These classic methods are interpreted in a contemporary manner and are presented in a fashion specific context.

A unique highlight of the ESMOD Berlin – Focus textile manipulation course is the visitation of a successful professional, to provide each participant with an individual constructive critique on his or her work.

All courses are held in English, written handouts and task sheets are also available in German.

What we offer:

  • Insight in necessary materials (screen print, knit, appliqué)
  • Introduction to screen printing and its modern interpretation
  • Foundation knit (machine and hand-knit) & felt
  • Appliqué techniques and uses
  • Experimental execution
  • Use of textile designs in a collection context

F3-11 Focus fashion illustration (intensive course)

The ESMOD Berlin – Focus Illustration course creates a deeper understanding of the many layers of the creative design profession and instructs participants on key strategies for using fundamental and alternative illustration techniques.
This course challenges the participant to develop and expand his or her basic illustration skill while exploring well-known and innovative methods and techniques.

A unique highlight of the ESMOD Berlin – Focus illustration course is the visitation of a successful professional illustrator, to provide each participant with an individual constructive critique on his or her work.

All courses are held in English, written handouts and task sheets are also available in German.

What we offer:

  • Classic drawing techniques (e.g. water colour, Marker, pencil, etc.)
  • Alternative illustration techniques (e.g. Collage, spatula, one line, ball point pen, etc.)
  • Proportion figurine & anatomy
  • Face & hair
  • Experimental materials & mixed media
  • Detail studies: e.g. pleats and patterns

F1-11 Focus draping for beginners (intensive course)

The ESMOD Berlin – draping for beginners course gives an insight into the art of draping and developing creative garments straight on the mannequin. Through discovering classic and innovative draping methods an understanding of three-dimensional patternmaking is created.

A unique highlight of the ESMOD Berlin – draping for beginners course is the visitation of a professional pattern maker from the ESMOD network, to provide each participant with an individual constructive critique on his or her work.

All courses are held in English, written handouts and task sheets are also available in German.

What we offer:

  • Introduction into different materials
  • Material preparation
  • Volume studies on the dummy
  • Foundation of draping and detail development
  • Pattern development based on draping results and labelling pattern pieces correctly
  • Finishing techniques

F2-11 Focus Portfolio & presentation (intensive course)

The ESMOD Berlin – Focus Portfolio course covers the artistic component of creating your personal portfolio. It teaches the importance of presenting your own work coherently and builds a foundation, which will benefit your future design studies.
Our portfolio course gives an insight into the creative work of a fashion designer. Therefor this course is also suitable for participants interested in discovering this artistic and exciting world.

A unique highlight of the ESMOD Berlin – Focus Portfolio course is the visitation of a successful professional fashion designer from the ESMOD network, to provide each participant with an individual constructive critique on his or her work.

All courses are held in English, written handouts and task sheets are also available in German.

What we offer:

  • Overview of requirements for a individual contemporary portfolio
  • Develop a personal character within your portfolio
  • Drawing- and illustration techniques
  • Foundation – figurine & conceptual design
  • Foundation – anatomy & proportion

F5-13 Focus patternmaking (weekend course)

The ESMOD Berlin – Focus Introduction Patternmaking Course deals with the basic principles of modern pattern making and gives an insight into the art and craftsmanship of pattern construction. Through discovering classic techniques an understanding of this essential part of the design process is created.

All courses are held in English, written handouts and task sheets are also available in German.

What we offer:

  • Introduction into different materials (mannequin, calico, tools, etc.)
  • Introduction: sewing machine, overlocker, ironing press, etc.
  • Construction of a basic block (top size 36 – sample size)
  • Design specific dart manipulation
  • Sleeve construction
  • Calico sample (toile)

According to §11(1) of the Berlin educational leave regulations, all ESMOD Berlin - Focus courses can be recognised as educational leave.

For start date, duration as well as participants and enrolment information please see the individual course outlines. All prices include necessary materials. Additional materials must be purchased at the participant’s expense.

All courses are held in English, written handouts and task sheets are also available in German. In case of language barriers arrangements can be made on an individual basis.
